💰 No More New Pennies
After 232 years, the penny has passed away with little fanfare. The clock ran out Wednesday, November 12, 2025 when the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia produced the final pennies to go into circulation. The 1-cent coins had been minted there since 1793.
Pennies are still considered legal tender, so they will remain in circulation--but no new pennies will be made. It was mainly a financial decision because a single penny costs about 3 cents to produce. Estimates say there are about 250 billion pennies still in circulation.
Abraham Lincoln has been the face of the penny since 1909--but when the penny was born, Lady Liberty graced one side of the coin. Now, with the penny gone, all eyes are on the nickel because the 5-cent coin costs about 10 cents to produce.
