⏳ #TBT My Hubby

Anyone who knows my hubby, knows he loves to write in his spare time. He didn't write the following quote, but it is so him just the same... "When I was 5 years old, my mom always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy.' They told me I didn't understand the assignment and I told them they didn't understand life."

The quote was written by The Late John Lennon of The Beatles and even though I didn't know my hubby when he was 5 years old, it sounds like something he would've said. He laughed when I told him last night I was going to do this throwback post and he knew about the quote because he reads a lot too. He said his grandmother put him in the photo booth at Woolworth to have this pic taken!

Supreme Court Replacement for Justice Ginsburg

Please consider signing the petition to honor The Late Justice Ginsburg's request as noted above to her granddaughter, Clara Spera, so that letters can be sent to your senators to delay the new Supreme Court Justice nomination until after Inauguration Day. If you are concerned that it is a scam, please click on the image or this text link to read the article about the petition before you participate. Thank you!

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

A Statement from Derrick Johnson, President & CEO of the NAACP...

The NAACP family is devasted by the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg. She was an incredibly accomplished civil rights lawyer who devoted her entire legal career to the pursuit of equal justice and eliminating discrimination of all types. When President Bill Clinton nominated her to the Supreme Court, he called her the “Thurgood Marshall of gender equality law.”

Justice Ginsburg’s 27-year tenure on the Supreme Court was marked by a passion for justice and the rule of the law. Her long, remarkable record includes her legendary opinions involving disability rights in Olmstead v. LC, and gender equality in the military, United States v. Virginia. She was also known for her powerful dissents, many of which she delivered from the bench. These include dissents in the voting rights decision of Shelby County v. Holder, the gender equity case of Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire Company Co., and the affirmative action case of Ricci v. Stefano.

The country has lost its north star for justice. As we move forward in the weeks and months ahead, we must honor Justice Ginsburg’s memory and extraordinary contributions, and remember that the Supreme Court is the ultimate guardian of all of our civil rights and liberties.

Recommended Reading For Everyone

"There’s no feeling like finishing a book, and I’m proud of this one. I’ve spent the last few years reflecting on my presidency, and in A Promised Land I’ve tried to provide an honest accounting of my presidential campaign and my time in office: the key events and people who shaped it, my take on what I got right and the mistakes I made, and the political, economic, and cultural forces that my team and I had to confront then––and that as a nation we are grappling with still. In the book, I’ve also tried to give readers a sense of the personal journey that Michelle and I went through during those years, with all the incredible highs and lows. And finally, at a time when America is going through such enormous upheaval, the book offers some of my broader thoughts on how we can heal the divisions in our country going forward and make our democracy work for everybody––a task that won’t depend on any single president, but on all of us as engaged citizens. Along with being a fun and informative read, I hope more than anything that the book inspires young people across the country––and around the globe––to take up the baton, lift up their voices, and play their part in remaking the world for the better."

Family Keepsakes

Yesterday, we took one of our trips over to mom's house to check on things, pick-up mail, etc. While I was looking around the living room, the "ship clock" on the mantle caught my eyes... that's the name I gave it 60 years ago when I learned how to talk.

It looks like any old clock but for me, it now symbolizes the one thing in the house that I can remember as far back as I remember my parents. Many things wore out and were replaced over the course of our years there as a family, but not the "ship clock".

I remember it moved into the house with us in 1967 from the North Philly apartment where we lived. I was always fascinated with the little black button you could push down on, and the "ship holes" would light up red and white. The lights eventually burned out, but the clock still works without missing a beat to this day.

When I was a little girl, I never imagined that a time would come in which my parents would be gone and the "ship clock" would still be here. But, life is short and time marches on...

🕊 Happy Grandparents Day

National Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day, which is today. Because I still have vivid memories of time spent with all of my grandparents, and I've experienced being a grandparent myself for the past 14 years, this day means a lot to me. So, Happy Heavenly Grandparents Day to my maternal and paternal grandmothers, and my paternal grandfather. I still love and miss all of you very much, and may you continue to rest peacefully in paradise until we meet again! 🕊 #GrandmaCora 🕊 #GrandaddyGene 🕊 #GrandmotherMary

A Master Class Event

UPDATE: 🏆 Okay, it's now 10:00pm and I'm calling it! I love both singers, but I have to give the award to my girl, #Gladys!  She didn't come to play, knows ALL of her lyrics w/o the aid of a teleprompter, and her voice sounds exactly the same as the recordings. She is a great singer who never really got the accolades she should have throughout her career. As far as I'm concerned, Congratulations #Gladys, you won Verzuz! I still love you, Patti! 🎵🎶 #Classics

"A BLACK BELT IS A WHITE BELT THAT NEVER QUITS"

Our grandson received his #GreenBelt and certificate in karate class this morning. Because of #COVID19 and social distancing concerns, there was no graduation ceremony or group photo, and we were not allowed in the studio. Sadly, we could only look through the window while he put the belt on, but we're still proud of him.

We want to give a shout out to Madison at the front desk for taking the 3 studio pics, and another parent for the outdoor pic of all 3 of us. Our grandson has been working hard since May 2017 to achieve each AmeriKick belt level and their mantra is, "A Black Belt Is A White Belt That Never Quits!"

🕊 We Will Never Forget

A PROCLAMATION
By The President of The United States
Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance

Through the twisted steel of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, the scarred walls of the Pentagon, and the smoky wreckage in a field in southwest Pennsylvania, the patriotism and resiliency of the American people shone brightly on September 11, 2001. We stood as one people, united in our common humanity and shared sorrow. We grieved for those who perished and remembered what brought us together as Americans.

Today, we honor the lives we lost 9 years ago. On a bright September day, innocent men, women, and children boarded planes and set off for work as they had so many times before. Unthinkable acts of terrorism brought tragedy, destruction, pain, and loss for people across our Nation and the world.

As we pay tribute to loved ones, friends, fellow citizens, and all who died, we reaffirm our commitment to the ideas and ideals that united Americans in the aftermath of the attacks. We must apprehend all those who perpetrated these heinous crimes, seek justice for those who were killed, and defend against all threats to our national security. We must also recommit ourselves to our founding principles. September 11 reminds us that our fate as individuals is tied to that of our Nation. Our democracy is strengthened when we uphold the freedoms upon which our Nation was built: equality, justice, liberty, and democracy. These values exemplify the patriotism and sacrifice we commemorate today.

In that same spirit of patriotism, I call upon all Americans to join in service and honor the lives we lost, the heroes who responded in our hour of need, and the brave men and women in uniform who continue to protect our country at home and abroad. In April, I was proud to sign the bipartisan Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which recognizes September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Originated by the family members of those who lost loved ones on 9/11, the National Day of Service and Remembrance is an opportunity to salute the heroes of 9/11, recapture the spirit of unity and compassion that inspired our Nation following the attacks, and rededicate ourselves to sustained service to our communities.

Throughout the summer, people of all ages and backgrounds came together to lend a helping hand in their communities through United We Serve. As this summer of service draws to an end, we renew the call to engage in meaningful service activities and stay engaged with those projects throughout the year. Working together, we can usher in a new era in which volunteering and more service is a way of life for all Americans. Deriving strength from tragedy, we can write the next great chapter in our Nation's history and ensure that future generations continue to enjoy the promise of America.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as Patriot Day, and by Public Law 111-13, approved April 21, 2009, has requested the observance of September 11 as an annually recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11 as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. I call upon all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States to display the flag of the United States at half-staff on Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance in honor of the individuals who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks against the United States that occurred on September 11, 2001. I invite the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and interested organizations and individuals to join in this observance. I call upon the people of the United States to participate in community service in honor of those our Nation lost, to observe this day with other ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46am eastern daylight time to honor the innocent victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.

Barack Obama
