Black History Matters All Day, Every Day

We celebrate our total emancipation and freedom from slavery on on this day. It was June 19, 1865 (two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was in effect) when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, TX with news that the Civil War had ended and the enslaved were now free. The celebration carries the connotation that until we’re all free, none of us are free!
