To Braid Or Not To Braid

Black Dad Puts Racist Baby Mama on Blast
After He Takes Their Biracial Daughter To Get Braids

Well, here we go again with the degradation of black girls and their hairstyles. I just did a post and shared an article link about this going on in schools a few days ago. So, I encourage you to read this article and then, consider the following comments.

(1) To this white mom who views her biracial daughter as 'mostly white', I would ask what rock has she been living under and advise her to think again. This so-called great country of ours determined a long, long time ago that anyone who has a drop of black blood, is BLACK (period, no exceptions).

(2) Regardless of what this mom thinks, because of number 1 above her daughter will be perceived as black throughout the course of her life. So, mom needs to start accepting that now because America's not changing anytime soon, if ever. This country has a long way to go when it comes to lines drawn in the sand about race.

(3) If this mom has a problem with numbers 1 and 2 above, she needs to start with the person in the mirror and work on her own racist mindset, stereotypes, etc. before she can even begin to accept, appreciate, and love her daughter for who she is and always will be.

(4) Black girls get their hair braided and for the record, white girls do too when they know how to do it themselves or know someone who can do it for them. It's merely one of many creative forms of hair expression--but, it's constantly demeaned, dismissed, and maligned as a 'black thing' and thus, something negative for no reason whatsoever.

(5) Finally, I would say get over yourself, mom. Ironically, your daughter is going to need YOU to protect her from people who think like you do so she can grow and mature into a self-confident woman who accepts and loves herself in the skin she is in--hair and hairstyles included.
