Dark Shadows Novels

Do you remember watching this ABC soap opera, which aired from 1966-1971? Even though I had nightmares and wanted to sleep with my parents many times after watching it, I couldn't resist tuning in everyday after school. Did you know several years after the show ended, Lara Parker, who is an author and played 'Angelique' on the show, wrote 3 novels to continue the eerie (and, sometimes erotic) tales of The Collins Family? 'Angelique's Descent' was released in 1998 and reissued in 2012, 'The Salem Branch' was released in 2006, 'Wolf Moon Rising' was released in 2013, and 'Heiress of Collinwood' (not shown) was released in 2016. All of them are available in various formats at Amazon.

The Complexities of Complexion in America

Complexion in Jim Crow America could be a tricky thing. In the spring of 1955, Ebony Magazine ran a curious story about The Platts, a family of Florida orange-pickers who had been "barred from the best schools because of a nose and ostracized because of the tint of the skin" despite their claims of being white. According to teachers and law enforcement officials in Lake County, FL, six of The Platts’ seven children had dusky complexions and "broad noses" befitting Negroes. Thus, the family had no place in the "whites only" community to which they belonged. Local authorities expelled The Platts' kids from Lake County's white schools and forced the family to move out of their white neighborhood and into a house without running hot water and other basic amenities. R.I.P. Glen...

This is my favorite song by Glen Campbell and personal tribute after learning about his passing today. I played the violin throughout elementary school and our orchestra performed this song at a spring concert when I was in the 6th grade. At the time, I didn't really like country music, but I had to learn how to play the string arrangements in this song for the performance. Despite how young I was and much to my surprise, the song appealed to my musical ear because I always liked pretty melodies. As I got older, I thought it was hauntingly beautiful and never forgot it. It's still in my vinyl collection of music to this day and every now and then, I pull it out and listen to it. What can I say? I'm old school... so, I still have a turntable too!
