Out & About

Between caring for mom and staying home because of #COVID19, it's been a while since I've gone out of the house for any reason other than medical appointments. Thanks to my daughter Tasha, I became a card-carrying member of BJ's at the store in Springfield today. After that, we went to Giant and when I saw this thing headed my way, I'm thinking WTH? At first, I thought it was some new type of security. So, I asked the clerk what it was and she said it alerts them to messes that need to be cleaned up around the store. But, many times, it claims there's a mess when it's not. She thought it would be nice if it cleaned up the mess too, instead of alerting them about it. And, the young man behind the mask is my grandson, who is just as tall as I am now. Lawdy!

Homegoing Service For Mom

We said our final goodbyes to mom today. Because of the guest limit for social distancing related to COVID-19, she had a private service but the viewing preceding it and the interment afterward were both public. None of our out-of-town relatives were able to come because of age, health issues, or imposed virus quarantines and restrictions. Unfortunately, most of them live in Georgia and Florida, and both states are considered "hot spots" for the virus right now. She was buried with dad, who passed away in 2002.

💜 I Loved Someone With Dementia Until The End

My personal #FaithJourney with mom down the road of dementia is over now. I am heartbroken but also relieved that her mental torment and physical anguish has finally come to an end. I'm thankful that God decided to call her home to be with Him so she didn't have to suffer anymore. It was a hard and tough road that no parent should have to travel alone, but I wouldn't wish the things we experienced on my worst enemies.

Mom specifically had Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), which is a beast that comes with a variety of symptoms—aggression, behavior disturbances, capgras syndrome, delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, parkinsonism, and psychosis. She struggled with all of the symptoms and ultimately lost her ability to swallow, talk, and walk during the final stage of the disease. It was very difficult to watch her go through the latter phase in particular, and the entire process was like a nightmare we couldn't wake-up from.

Because I'm an only child, there were no siblings to share the load of caregiving. But, my hubby and daughter were very supportive from beginning to end, and I cannot thank them enough for everything they did to help. The level of care that was required would have been impossible to manage without their assistance. My father passed away in 2002 so I no longer have living parents, but until we meet again I take solace in knowing that they are back together now, and on the same day they got married 63 years ago in 1957.

R.I.P. to my beloved mother, first best friend, and queen of my life, who passed away yesterday on July 19, 2020. She was 88 years old, extremely independent, fiercely strong-willed, and so worth the journey. She would want you to know that she didn't go down without a fight, and she fought the beast with every ounce of mental and physical strength she had for as long as she could. Please keep our family in your prayers at this time.

COVID-19: Questions Regarding School Openings

• If a teacher tests positive for the Coronavirus, are they required to quarantine for 2-3 weeks? Is their sick leave covered and paid?

• If that teacher has 5 classes a day with 30 students each, do all 150 of those students need to then stay home and quarantine for 14 days?

• Do all 150 of those students now have to get tested? Who pays for those tests? Are they happening at school? How are the parents being notified? Does everyone in each of those kids' families need to get tested? Who pays for their tests?

• What if someone who lives in the same house as a teacher tests positive? Does that teacher now need to take 14 days off of work to quarantine? Is that time off covered and paid?

• Where is the district going to find a substitute teacher who will work in a classroom full of exposed and possibly infected students for substitute pay?

• Substitutes teach in multiple schools. What if they are diagnosed with COVID-19? Do all the kids in each school now have to quarantine and get tested? Who pays for those tests?

• What if a student in your kid's class tests positive? What if your kid tests positive? Does every other student and teacher they have been around quarantine? Do we all get notified who is infected and when, or because of HIPAA regulations, are parents and teachers just going to get mysterious “may have been in contact” emails all year long?

• What is this stress going to do to our teachers? How does it affect their health and well-being? How does it affect their ability to teach? How does it affect the quality of education they are able to provide? What is it going to do to our kids? What are the long-term effects of consistently being stressed out?

• How will it affect students and faculty when the first teacher in their school dies from it? When the first parent of a student who brought it home dies from it? When the first kid dies from it?

• How many more people are going to die that otherwise would not have if we had stayed home longer?

30% of the teachers in the U.S. are over 50 years old. About 16% of the total deaths in the U.S. are people between the ages of 45-65.

We are choosing to put our teachers, students, and everyone they come in contact with in danger!

COVID-19: Prayer of the Day

It is with faith in our Heavenly Father and a sad heart that I kneel today in prayer to ask for the recovery of patients with #COVID19, and to ask the Lord for continued protection for those who have not suffered with the virus yet. I ask God for help to find out what will bring it to an end. I ask the Holy Spirit to order our steps and guide all people toward peace. May we be on one accord with each other and stand strong together during this difficult time. Thank you for all of the blessings that you have given us, Lord. Amen!

A Tribute to Black Lives Lost in Recent Years

And, this is by no means all of them. This tribute only represents the deaths you may know about thanks to cell phone videos, social media, and more news coverage. But, make no mistake, this has been going on for many, many years.

During the time I was growing up in Philadelphia, it happened all the time under the leadership of then Police Chief (1968-1971) and later Mayor (1972-1980), Frank L. Rizzo. Even though it was long overdue, that is why his statue was finally removed from Center City. For those of you who are just now coming to the realization that something is definitely wrong with the way black people are and have been treated by the police, we have been trying to get the city to remove that statue since the last century.

Now, let me take a wild guess. Other than George Floyd (center), you probably don't know the name of anyone in this tribute, despite the massive news coverage each of them received at the time of their individual deaths. Does it surprise you to know that we know all of them by name? Why not make a commitment to start there going forward and take the time to learn the names of black people who are murdered by the police? Do it because their lives mattered!

I Finally Created My Own Avatar

Well, I'm not sure if I will ever use this thing, but I was curious about creating one just to see how it would turn out. So, for better or worst, this is supposed to be me without my #COVID19 mask and reading glasses. Now that I'm retired, the clothes are definitely on point because comfortable is the rule of the day. I'm happy with the finished product and I must confess, I had fun creating me!
