Oh, wow. This brought back some memories that haven't crossed my mind in a very, very long time... The answer to the question is, these are tobacco leaves. When I was growing up, my parents sent me down south during the summer sometimes to spend time with my grandmother in Georgia. When I was 13 and 14yo, I worked in a tobacco barn and used a machine to string these huge leaves together for curing while I was down there. Every morning, a pick-up truck came and took me and my cousin there, and brought us back to my grandmother's house at the end of the day. Being a "city girl," it took a minute to learn how to handle the job and I didn't like it much, but I loved making and having my own money to bring back to Philly. So, I guess it was my very first job!
