Black Stars & Their Cars

Back in 2011, the hubby and I had the pleasure of visiting the Stax Records Museum in Memphis, TN-- which is home to Isaac Haye's Cadillac Eldorado. This past weekend, we had the pleasure of visiting the National Museum of African American History & Culture--which is home to Chuck Berry's Cadillac Eldorado. Of course, we took pictures of both cars because they were in mint condition and something to behold. Click on the images and see for yourself!

Declaration of Commitment to Resistance

This is where I stand. Period. And, I will NOT make any apologies for the following words or statements.

I am aware that there are those who are tired of political posts and rants. However, social media is a platform for me to use my voice in support of many different things. It is also a way for me to engage against the current administration in the White House, its power hungry cronies, and their positions of authority--all of whom pose an active and real threat to me, my way of life, my family, my friends, the people I love, and many others. So, unless you are in a good financial place (i.e. billionaire), they are a threat to you and your life as well.

I will continue to be a part of the resistance and proud of it. I refuse to "play nice" in the face of what these people are doing. Our country's well-being demands that we stand and resist. Some people are saying that we should give #45 a chance and we should "work together" with him because he won the election and he is "everyone's president." Well, this is my response to those people.

• I will NOT forget how badly he and so many others treated #44 for eight years.
• I will NOT "work together" to privatize Medicare and cut Medicaid and Social Security.
• I will NOT "work together" to deny health care to people who need it.
• I will NOT "work together" to deny medical coverage to people on the basis of an actual or alleged "pre-existing condition."
• I will NOT "work together" to increase the profits of insurance companies.
• I will NOT "work together" to allow men to make choices about a woman's own body, or to restrict health care for women.
• I will NOT "work together" to remove anyone's civil rights.
• I will NOT "work together" to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico.
• I will NOT "work together" to persecute Muslims.
• I will NOT "work together" to shut out refugees from countries where we destabilized their governments, so that we could have something more agreeable to our oligarchy.
• I will NOT "work together" to lower taxes on the 1%.
• I will NOT "work together" to increase taxes on the middle class and poor.
• I will NOT "work together" to help #45 use the presidency to line his pockets and those of his cronies.
• I will NOT "work together" to weaken and demolish environmental protection.
• I will NOT "work together" to sell American lands, especially National Parks, to companies which then despoil those lands.
• I will NOT "work together" in any way to enable the killing of whole species of animals just because they are predators, or inconvenient for a few, or because some people want to get their thrills by killing them.
• I will NOT "work together" to waste trillions more dollars on our military when we already have the strongest defense in the world.
• I will NOT "work together" to alienate countries that have been our allies for as long as I have been alive.
• I will NOT "work together" to slash funding for education.
• I will NOT work together" to eliminate the arts or the institutions that support them.
• I will NOT "work together" to take basic assistance from people who are at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder.
• I will NOT "work together" to allow torture and "black op" prison sites.
• I will NOT "work together" to "take their oil."
• I will NOT "work together" to get rid of common sense regulations on guns.
• I will NOT "work together" to eliminate the minimum wage.
• I will NOT "work together" to support so-called "Right To Work" laws, or undermine, weaken, or destroy unions in any way.
• I will NOT "work together" to suppress scientific research, be it on climate change, fracking, or any other issue where a majority of scientists agree that #45 and his supporters are wrong on the facts.
• I will NOT "work together" to increase the number of nations that have nuclear weapons.
• I will NOT "work together" to put even more "big money" into politics.
• I will NOT "work together" to violate the Geneva Convention.
• I will NOT "work together" to give the Ku Klux Klan, the Nazi Party, and White Supremacists a seat at the table, or to normalize their hatred.
• I will NOT "work together" to increase voter suppression.
• I will NOT "work together" to normalize tyranny.
• I will NOT “work together” to eliminate or reduce ethical oversite at any level of government.
• I will NOT "work together" with anyone who is or admires, tyrants and dictators who murder their opposition.
• I will NOT "work together" with #45 because I will NOT allow one man to feed upon the fears of the populace by blaming minorities for their condition or their inability to thrive.

This is the line and I am drawing it. I DO and will stand for honesty, love, respect for all living beings, and for the compassion and humanity that is the center of life itself.

I will use my voice and hands to reach out to the uninformed and anyone else who is willing to listen to what is really so dangerous about #45, his friends, and the big lie they spin to the world. Winning, being great again, rich, or even beautiful mean nothing when others are sacrificed to glorify its existence.

Consider this an opportunity to make a declaration of commitment to resistance. It's your choice to make a difference. If you want to copy and paste the declaration on a social media platform to show your commitment to the same, feel free to do it.

Dark Shadows Novels

Do you remember watching this ABC soap opera, which aired from 1966-1971? Even though I had nightmares and wanted to sleep with my parents many times after watching it, I couldn't resist tuning in everyday after school. Did you know several years after the show ended, Lara Parker, who is an author and played 'Angelique' on the show, wrote 3 novels to continue the eerie (and, sometimes erotic) tales of The Collins Family? 'Angelique's Descent' was released in 1998 and reissued in 2012, 'The Salem Branch' was released in 2006, 'Wolf Moon Rising' was released in 2013, and 'Heiress of Collinwood' (not shown) was released in 2016. All of them are available in various formats at Amazon.

The Complexities of Complexion in America

Complexion in Jim Crow America could be a tricky thing. In the spring of 1955, Ebony Magazine ran a curious story about The Platts, a family of Florida orange-pickers who had been "barred from the best schools because of a nose and ostracized because of the tint of the skin" despite their claims of being white. According to teachers and law enforcement officials in Lake County, FL, six of The Platts’ seven children had dusky complexions and "broad noses" befitting Negroes. Thus, the family had no place in the "whites only" community to which they belonged. Local authorities expelled The Platts' kids from Lake County's white schools and forced the family to move out of their white neighborhood and into a house without running hot water and other basic amenities. Click on the magazine page or text link underneath to read the full story.

R.I.P. Glen...

This is my favorite song by Glen Campbell and personal tribute after learning about his passing today. I played the violin throughout elementary school and our orchestra performed this song at a spring concert when I was in the 6th grade. At the time, I didn't really like country music, but I had to learn how to play the string arrangements in this song for the performance. Despite how young I was and much to my surprise, the song appealed to my musical ear because I always liked pretty melodies. As I got older, I thought it was hauntingly beautiful and never forgot it. It's still in my vinyl collection of music to this day and every now and then, I pull it out and listen to it. What can I say? I'm old school... so, I still have a turntable too!
